What to do in Corfu!

Few tips and recommendations about Corfu town and the island!

What to do in Corfu town.
-Kanoni (spectacular view and landmark) with view of Pontikonisi Island
-Mon Repos Palace. There is also a short walking path there that will take you to an ancient temple.
-At the entrance of Mon Repos Palace there is the remain of a very old Vasilica Byzantine style church.
-Anenomylos area with a great view of the Garitsa Bay and the fortress where you can relax and drink a coffee or the local ginger beer
-Of course you must visit the old fortress.
– The Asian Museum (the only one in Greece), just outside the old fortress
-The CasaParlante museum just behind Liston.
– Saint Spyridon church (lots of churched but this one is a very historic one)
– You can also visit the open market where you can find lots of fresh products (vegetables, fish, etc)
– Outside Corfu town there is the: Achilleion Palace [en.wikipedia. rg/wiki/Achilleion_(Corfu)]
– As for bars, the Liston is popular for coffee and drinks, Aktaion just outside the fortress, Bristol bar, Club54 for very late. Also there is Anemomylos, Nautilus with great view.

There are also a lot of restaurants with itallian food but I guess you would like to try Greek-Corfiot dishes, so I am suggesting:

Sofrito (with garlic), Pastitsada (Rooster with pasta and sauce) as Corfiot dishes and the list goes on with other traditional Greek food. He is a list of the most important: [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Greek_dishes]

Things to taste:

Main local dishes, Sofrito (with garlic), Pastitsada, Bourdeto

Also try: tzatziki, Courgette balls (kolokythokeftedes), of course feta cheese (or fried called saganaki or even with honey), Dolmadakia, pastitsio

Sweets: Vanilla Submarine, Loukoumades, Glyka Tou Koutaliou (spoon sweets)

Drinks: Corfu beer (fresh beer, voted between the best three in the world!), ouzo

Corfu is a big island and has countless beaches.
1. Palaiokastritsa (30 minutes drive from town): it has a nice monastery there and of course beaches and you could take a small boat that could take you to a couple beaches that you could visit only by boat, my favourite Rovinia. You need almost a whole day for Palaiokastritsa.
2. Pelekas kaiser’s throne (20 minutes drive): nice view of the island. Glyfada beach (one of the 10 best beaches in the world) is nearby so you can have also a swim there. Returning from the beach you can stop at Pelekas village and have a meal at the nearby restaurants with a view of the town.
3. Barbati (North East). About 30 minutes by car. It is not sandy but the waters are beautiful.
4. Ag. Gordios (West). About 15-20 minues by car. It is a sandy beach with lots of bars and restaurants by the sea. Sunbeds and umbrella are usually free if you order a coffee or drink. If you go early you get the first row of the sunbeds. My favourite spot on the beach is close to the Ark cafe.
5. South is another option. They are about 40-45 minutes from town. My favourite Chalikounas (South West): About 30 minutes away. Sandy beach of course, not that many people and my favoyrite spot is in front of Tayo bar. You can spent the whole day if you want to relax and enjoy the sunshine at the bar and then leave.
6. Issos (South West, further down Chalikouna beach): Basically it is a large sandy coastline that consists of several beaches, Most popular are Marathias, Vitalades, Gardeno. All of them are magnificant.

It is not possible to visit all of them so you will have to choose!
